Method

  1. Add the frozen berries, frozen banana, yogurt, milk, and honey to a blender, layering the frozen fruit near the blades to help it catch.

  2. Blend on low to start, then increase to high, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed; the goal is a thick, soft-serve consistency, not a pourable smoothie.

  3. If the mixture is too thick to blend, add milk one tablespoon at a time, using as little as possible so the base stays scoopable.

  4. Blend until completely smooth with no chunks of frozen fruit remaining, which takes about 1 to 2 minutes.

  5. Taste the base and blend in a little more honey if you want it sweeter.

  6. Divide the thick smoothie between two bowls and use the back of a spoon to smooth the tops into an even surface.

  7. Arrange the granola, sliced fresh fruit, shredded coconut, and chia seeds in neat rows or sections on top for a colorful presentation.

  8. Serve immediately with a spoon, since the bowl is meant to be eaten thick and cold before it melts.

  9. If you need to firm it up before topping, place the filled bowls in the freezer for 5 minutes.

Chef's tips

  • Freeze ripe banana chunks ahead of time; frozen fruit is what gives the bowl its thick, spoonable texture without watering it down with ice.
  • Use as little liquid as possible; a common beginner mistake is adding too much milk, which turns the bowl into a drinkable smoothie.
  • Add the toppings right before serving so the granola stays crunchy.

Cooking times vary by equipment -- cook to temperature and to taste.
